Baptisms and Christenings
What is baptism? What is christening?
A christening is a Christian blessing which usually involves baptism. Baptism started in the New Testament and is a way of showing God’s unconditional love and his forgiveness, and it is the way in which a person, whether baby, child or adult formally makes a new start and joins the church congregation.
In baptism we agree to turn our lives around and put harmful ways behind us as we follow Jesus who has brought us into a new relationship with God.
At Lindley Methodist Church baptisms are carried out as part of our Sunday morning 10.45am service when the church family welcomes them into the life of the church.
At Lindley Methodist Church we often baptise adults. If you are an adult and are interested in getting baptised or confirmed, we will be very happy to talk to you about this and help you explore what it means.
For babies, some people prefer a Thanksgiving Service, as some parents believe that baptism is not appropriate for them.
Some parents feel (because baptism is so meaningful) that they want their child to be able to ask for baptism, if and when they are ready to respond for themselves.
All nevertheless want to thank God for the safe arrival of their child and express their love for that child.
